Educational institutions are confronted with a gigantic task of providing real-time information to their clientele amidst budgetary and human resource constraints. A simple html based static website could no longer provide this kind of service considering the demands. Gladly, the birth of Content Management System (CMS) provides a great deal of alleviation to this problem. In fact, there is already what we call Educational CMS.

Educational CMS provides a dynamic flat-form to showcase the institution. It may include functionalities like online enrollment system, grading system and even course management systems. So, by CMS here, we do not limit it to the course management systems. Instead, we are talking about the system that provides venue for collaborative presentations.

As we have mentioned, the primary use of the Educational CMS is to provide all stakeholders with a venue to contribute their intellectual resources and materials to the school’s online presence. Many companies would like to claim that they have the capabilities to provide Educational CMS. Looking into Google’s directory alone will give you a list of more that four hundred sites for CMS. The task of choosing the right CMS to fit the need of the institution could already mean hours of hard labor.

Our hope is to provide guidelines for educational instructions in their struggle to land the right Educational CMS. We shall include in the series issues like hosting, costing, learning curve, security, after sales, content life cycle, functionalities and security. The discussion however will not provide boxed in answers; only guides. The mention of some companies in the article does mean that we are promoting them. The inclusion is random. The whole idea is to provide a comparison of existing providers.

Finally, this article will not delve into the politics of choosing. We understand very well that individual institutions have their own criteria in choosing the direction they want to take.

Education is really a thriving business. If you search Google with the keyword “Educational CMS”, you will be bombarded with a hundred and one pages of results!

Okay! Okay! That is an exaggeration. The point is really very simple. There are more
than a hundred companies that provide educational content management system (CMS) software be it fully customized or standard customizable software. Moving into the search would reveal that there are thousands more that discuss educational CMS.

What is an Educational CMS? It is a system that is primarily for educational institutions. It is an online tool that enhances lectures and trainings. It is directed at helping schools to improve educational experience.

The traditional educational institutions have an entirely unique way of choosing their CMS. Most of these institutions are really forced to work on very limited budgets. So, the choices they make will be shaped by budgetary constraints and some politics. Educational CMS providers that deal with traditional educational systems are forced to offer their products by module. Meaning, if the institution decides to increase the functionality of the CMS, they will have to pay extra.

Ironically, the targets for most businesses that provide the program and or the support of the Educational CMS are not really the traditional educational institutions. There are only a couple of traditional educational institutions that are capable of procuring or implementing their own Educational CMS. These companies are actually competing to get major businesses to subscribe to their service or their software for training purposes.

Why is this so? The future of a company depends on continuous education. This makes training vital to every successes and growth of the company. In this fast and competitive business sector, one cannot afford to stay idle for more than a month. Likewise, if you have something new to promote, your business would need a quick turn around to implement the training without really pulling out these people from their regular work.

This is where Education CMS would come in. In all software currently available in the market, there is no need for all people to sit at one time to discuss about something new. In fact, they can do the training or the lesson at their own pace. If I have a business, the training of a new employee does not need to take up much effort from the trainer. You simply allow the newbie to sit in front of the computer and give him/her the sequence of the modules to take.

Of course, these companies will not turn their head away from any traditional educational institutions once they come to them for assistance. The idea will always be, if they come to you for business they surely have the resources. If not, they could be a good name to help you market your products.

If there are many Educational CMS providers, our next question will be: do we have a guide on which system to choose? This is a topic that we will discuss in the next installment of the subject.

[just making sure this is not found somewhere else. the article has been rejected by a client due to the use of the blur in the definition of the acronym CMS] -My writing style]

Internet has altered the way commerce works. It has connected people across walls, mountains & seas. It linked cultures that were once divided due to distance. It has unified the world.

The internet has unparalleled reliability. We have seen banking transactions securely processed over the internet. We have seen communications transmitted without the fear of being read by unwanted persons. Unlike other medium, the security that could be implemented over the internet is way ahead.

Unlike direct cabling and traditional data transfer, the internet provides low cost, wide area networking. In fact, across the United States we can find internet providers charging just a little more than ten dollars to give you a month of connectivity.

WebERP has benefited from all these. It is further more beneficial than other programs because it uses a common interface existing on all computers – a web browser.

WebERP has minimal investment in infrastructure. Instead of getting a whole new hardware for its server, one can just subscribe on a reliable web hosting provider like anaffordableoption.com.

Furthermore, there is no need for you to hire an expensive bunch of network engineers to manage your server. The demand for programmers to maintain is also minimal. One can even hire a virtual assistant to provide support at a very affordable per hour service.

Finally, it is open-source. It is unlocked and the source is available for anyone to customize according to their own business need.

I choose Odesk for my most recent assignment online. I have been a member for sometime but I usually would choose to get paid via paypal or in other forms.

The sad thing with that setup is the fact that there were unpaid projects and unpaid hours. With Odesk, this does not happen.

There are two options at Odesk, the Fixed and the Hourly rates. As for the hourly rates, whatever is logged and has been agreed upon will be billed on the buyer on a per week basis. All that the service provider needs to do is to make sure that he/she log-in to the correct work assignment/team as he/she works on the project.

Fixed priced project is a different nut. You will bid to finish a work and Odesk will only bill the buyer upon the completion of the project. The only assurance that you have is to let the buyer to agree to pay a percentage of the project’s price.

Lucky for me, my buyers love odesk as well.

Most managers and owners would like to travel and yet remain updated with their business process. Almost always, they have to choose between the two.

In this internet age, there is no need for them to choose between the two. Likewise, there is no need for them to burn airtime credits and call credits just to remain updated. The only thing the they need to do first is to make sure that they have implemented an Enterprise resource planning (ERP) program that will allow them full access with full functionality yet secure while they are out of the office. They need a weberp!

So, what is enterprise resource planning (ERP)?
According to wiki, “Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is an enterprise-wide information system designed to coordinate all the resources, information, and activities needed to complete business processes such as order fulfillment or billing. An ERP system supports most of the business system that maintains in a single database the data needed for a variety of business functions such as Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management, Financials, Projects, Human Resources and Customer Relationship Management.” In short, it is the blueprint of the whole operations put into a fully intergrated system.

And what is WEBERP? WEBERP is an ERP that is fully webbased. No, I am not talking about a system that has internet access or a system that has an internet backdoor. I am talking about a system that is using the security settings available for most online business and stored on a web server that is fully live online.

This system is very much fitted for businesses that are either mobile or has multiple locations. Mobile businesses are small to medium sized businesses that need to be in a specific location on a different time of the year. On one hand, multiple location businesses could be in this setup: the manufacturing is done in one location while the distribution sector is located in different locations all over the country or all over the world.

Both type of businesses will greatly benefit from a WEBERP.

Mobile businesses would not worry about the safety of their server as they move from one location to another as it is not on their mobile office. Multiple warehouse location or office location will also be assured of the same. Should one site’s WAN access goes down, the other sites can remain live.

Of course, the tricky part is to choose the web server.

So can an ERP be setup with an internet access? The answer is YES. In fact it can be fully web based!

“It is better to move while the dust has not settled to position yourself to a better place when the smoke clears… whenever you see problems, you should see opportunities.” this I told one of my office mates.

People will always think that the best time to start a new project or to invest their money and time is when everything is clear. They believe that it is better to wait until financial atmosphere is at its best.

I have read a couple of success stories and have been through my own as well. Most of which never started when the financial atmosphere is at its best. In fact, most of the success stories are stories of people who made their move when everything was chaotic. Robinsons & Mercury Drugstore to name a few local establishments.

Most people will always wait for the “air to clear”….and it will not come because you have to make it happen. It may be a rough road but it is the only way to clear the smoke or we will be forever teary eyed.

i shared to my friends that my summer ends with volunteering to help a public school teacher in Sorsogon to clean up her classroom and make it ready for the school year.

I could not help by feel bad about what i saw during my 3 days of cleaning – repainting the rooms. And that 3 days was not even enough to make the room appear like a classroom. We tried to use lively colors but everything here could not be hidden.

The current state of our public education stinks. I do not know if the congressman from that place who has a lot to say about how evil this administration is, has a word to say on where his pork barrel has come to.

My dear president what is happening to our promise to bring a better future? I thought we all understand that the education is the best way to combat poverty.

The pictures below will tell us how impoverish are our schools in the province.

These are the classrooms used by the upper grade.

This is one of the chairs that i tried to drag near the door to get some light. The room is poorly lighted. So all my pictures inside are dark.

The ceiling is dilapidated and the ceiling fan is something that comes from the pocket of the already underpaid teachers.

From the inside, we tried to paint the walls to make it look worth staying and conducive to learning. But one could never deny that this is only a little better than the average pig pen in the area.

The doors and the lock! And the windows that you could not close.

These are the books of the grade four pupils. FOR YOUR EYES ONLY! As soon as you lift it up, it will disintegrate!

This one is the class room of the K1 & K2. I could only imagine how the kids will react as soon the rain pours.

The school looks good from afar. Yes, ONLY from AFAR!

Every year, the government takes taxes from all of us. As for me, they get at least 50K. Where did all the taxes go? Quo vadis?
